3. Scientists of the Budker’s Institute of Nuclear Physics developed a technology for optical diagnostics of the metal surface, which allows real-time observation of the process of cracking of wolfram as a result of powerful pulsed heating. The method helps to predict the reaction of this material under thermal load to the first wall of the vacuum chamber of the ITER thermonuclear reactor. The results are published in the journal “Physica Scripta”. This work was supported by a grant from the Russian Science Foundation. With the help of the new technology, the scientists obtained essentially new data on the behavior of materials under extreme conditions.
