1. Scientists from the recently established Thermal Spray laboratory at the Center for Design, Manufacturing, and Materials have provided a pioneering contact technology solution to increase electrical efficiency and, therefore, dramatically save the industry operational expense.



2. Scientists from the Skoltech Center for Energy Science and Technology have been granted a patent for a method of creating a high-efficiency conductive coating for metal-ion battery electrodes by carbonizing polyacrylonitrile. The coating's unique characteristics, such as a high degree of graphitization, uniformity, and nanoscale thickness(less than 5 nm), provide a dramatic increase in electronic conductivity and stability of electrode materials at long-term cycling, especially at high charge/discharge rates.



3. Specialists of the department ‘Advanced materials and technologies for aerospace purposes’ of the Moscow Aviation Institute are working on a new ultra-high-temperature carbon-ceramic material AeroSpace. The main purpose of the material is to create an effective thermal protection system for super-maneuverable hypersonic aircraft, which will increase the operating life of the equipment and, in the future, gain priority in defense production.



4. Scientists of the Federal Research Center ‘Krasnoyarsk Scientific Center’ of the SB RAS" together with colleagues from St. Petersburg, Great Britain and the Netherlands have developed a theory of the exchange interaction of optically excited magnetic ions and found out what happens to electrons when the crystals of iron oxides are influenced by laser radiation. Understanding this process opens the way for the targeted control of the magnetic properties of materials with the help of light.



5. A team of SFU scientists was the first to reveal the effect of anomalous behavior of atoms of a substance deposited on the surface of semiconductor substrates in the presence of aluminum atoms under conditions of drop epitaxy. This opens the way to promising new research on nanostructured substances and allows progress in the field of technology for creating quantum communication devices, which is almost impossible to hack, and quantum computers with enormous computing power compared to conventional computers.
