1. To calculate the limiting speed of sound, a group of scientists from Queen Mary University of London, University of Cambridge in Great Britain and the Institute for High Pressure Physics in Russia used the fine structure constant that characterizes the strength of the electromagnetic interaction between elementary charged particles, and the ratio of the proton mass to the electron mass, which is is the rest mass of the proton divided by the rest mass of the electron. The theoretical fundamental limit for the speed of sound is 36 kilometers per second(22 miles per second), which is about twice the speed of sound in a diamond.

2. Employees of the Faculty of Chemistry of UNN received a patent for the invention of a method for adding nanoparticles of noble metals(gold and silver) to titanium dioxide with anatase crystal structure. Titanium dioxide of anatase allotropic modification, doped with precious metal nanoparticles, is a highly efficient heterogeneous photocatalyst for the oxidation of organic pollutants of water and air to carbon dioxide and water.

Specialists of the Novosibirsk State Technical University NETI are working on the creation of fast-learning neural networks that can further help in the development of artificial intelligence for various spheres of human activity. For this they decided to apply a different learning algorithm – to teach artificial intelligence to recognize errors.

4. A group of chemists from the Institute of Organoelement Compounds of the Russian Academy of Sciences has proposed a new composition for photo printing. Under the influence of light, a special substance releases iron ions, which bind the dye molecules into a colored polymer. Thus, the illuminated areas of the material acquire a bright orange-red, blue or purple color, and the unlit areas remain colorless.

5. Scientists of the Institute of Catalysis of the SB RAS are studying nanostructured sulfide hydrotreating catalysts based on carbon nanotubes. Hydrotreating catalysts are used in refineries to remove sulfur and nitrogen from various oil residues, making the product better quality and less harmful to the environment.
