1. Employees of the Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technology of the Kola Scientific Center of the SB RAS have come up with a method that allows the destruction of toxic substances formed after staining with synthetic compounds. To do this, they performed electrocatalytic oxidation using a diamond electrode with the addition of boron. Using this method, wastewater can be purified from persistent industrial pollutants.



2. Scientists from Russia have figured out how to evaluate the concentration of NAD +, one of the most important markers of human aging. With its help, it will be possible to cheaply and quickly determine how much NAD + is in the body of each patient. They have found that it can be carried out using an enzyme that produces one type of yeast, the fungus Ogataea parapolymorpha. It is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry for the production of various synthetic proteins, including insulin and interferons.



3. Scientists at Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) proposed a method for improving implants used to repair damaged organs. There are methods to increase the hydrophilicity of scaffolds; the most effective of which is plasma treatment. But, as the scientists explained, within a few days the effect of such treatment weakens, and after a few weeks it disappears, worsening the survival rate of scaffolds. To improve their properties, TPU scientists decided to supplement the plasma surface treatment by applying a thin film of graphene oxide. This nanomaterial, as scientists have explained, has a high hydrophilicity, which does not degrade over time.



4. Russian scientists found out that they can find both new active ingredients for drugs and find new properties in already approved drugs. It turned out that recommender systems can determine whether compounds have antiviral activity and select the most promising drug candidates in large chemical and biological data. In particular, scientists used the ViralCHEMBL database to test the algorithms, which stores information about the antiviral activity of about 250 thousand small molecules relative to 158 types of viruses.



5. Scientists at the Federal Research Center for Fundamental and Translational Medicine have begun to investigate the use of photodynamic inactivation method used in oncology, gynecology, and skin diseases. Also it is expected to be used in overcoming a new coronavirus infection. The method has passed preliminary tests in the UK, where it has been shown to be highly effective in the prevention and treatment of both coronavirus infection and complicated pneumonia.
